Treatt subsidiary Earthoil has been awarded Fair for Life status for its Indian mint growing facility.

Fair for Life is a brand neutral third party certification programme for social accountability and fair trade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations and Earthoil’s award has be achieved through the IMO Social and Fair Trade Certification programme.

The company says it has received increasing interest and requests for fair trade materials, “particularly from the US where they see it as a lot less complex than organic,” says Hugo Bovill, md of Treatt. People’s consciences are being pricked and even in this climate they are still prepared to pay a premium, though in this case we have cut out the middle man, which means there is no premium and more money is going back to the producer.”

Earthoil is a wholly owned subsidiary of Treatt and supplies to the cosmetics industry as well as the organic consumer goods sector.

Speciality chemical supplier Clariant has announced that it is building a surfactants plant in Zhenjiang, China. Specialty chemical supplier Cognis has announced today that it has formally completed the sale of its Botanical Extracts business to Burgundy Botanical Extracts Iberia.

Cognis says it has completed this deal in order to streamline its portfolio in businesses which offer critical mass and bring competitive synergies in its key markets. Burgundy is a fast growing company specialising in the botanical extract business which has its headquarters in Lyon, France.

Stéphane Baseden, Cognis’ executive vice president of nutrition and health, says of the deal with Burgundy: “We are very pleased about this agreement and Cognis will work closely together with Burgundy to ensure a smooth transition of business operations.”

Under the agreement Cognis will continue production and distribution of certain botanical products for the cosmetics industry and will retain ownership of its Plantalin range – comprising of selective plant extracts designed for functional food and beverage applications.
